Family of superheroes to take to the streets of Liverpool next month

A dad-of-three will be taking on his 'biggest challenge yet' in a bid to raise funds for a cause close to his heart.

Starting at 9am on February 5, Tony Crone, from Speke, will be running 28-miles through Speke and Hale to raise money for Claire House Children's Hospice.

Dressed as their favourite superheroes, Tony will be taking part in the mega challenge alongside his wife Mel and three young children, Elizabeth-Ann, Andrew and Michael.

Back in 2020, Tony completed a 20-mile run around Speke, dressed as Santa, in a bid to spread Christmas cheer and raise funds for a vital cause - stopping every few miles for socially-distanced selfies.

In December 2021, the dad-of-three wanted to push himself further and was due to complete the 28-mile ultra marathon on Christmas Eve, but unfortunately he and his wife became unwell.

So, as not to let anyone down, Tony postponed the event until February of this year and has decided to dress up as a popular superhero.

Dressing up as Hulk, he will be joined by Spider-Man, Iron Man and Black Widow, with his wife still undecided over her superhero of choice.

He told the ECHO : "The other Christmas I ended up doing the Hale run and Speke run separate and was supposed to do them together on Christmas Eve but my wife and I got poorly.

"We decided to re-do it as superheroes instead. I really enjoy running, it's something I like doing.

"I've done a couple of things for charity in the past and Claire's House are always really grateful for the support.

"There are plenty of amazing charities in the area but I wanted to do something for a local cause. Claire House is based in the city and everyone recognises it, it made sense to choose somewhere local.

"I have three children and I've never needed them but my son was ill when he was born and I always knew I'd choose a children's charity to raise money for, whatever that may be."

Tony, a retirement living assistant, regularly updates his progress via his fundraising page as he gears up for the big day.

He added: "It will be my biggest and longest run so far. I'm looking forward to doing it with my family though.

"It's a lot nicer. The locals beep going past and my family have really enjoyed it in the past. When it's cold and you want to give up, your family is there to keep you going.

"We aren't sure where exactly yet but we will be stopping every so often to allow people to get pictures with us if they wish.

"One of the main reasons for doing it is after a bad couple of years. In 2020 people couldn't get out and now people are getting back out and about it's nice for people to see something fun, especially on a small estate.

"It spreads some positivity rather than the usual doom and gloom."
