Family of Scots kids football coach killed in car crash pay tribute to 'much loved' grandad

The family of a kids football coach killed in a horror car crash days after Christmas have paid tribute to the “much loved” dad and grandad.

Keith Smith died when his Vauxhall Astra collided with a Ford Kuga on the A6106 at Hillcrest, Danderhall, Midlothian, at 12.35pm on Tuesday.

The tragic 41-year-old from Danderhall coached local amateur team Edina Hibs for eight years and was known as ‘Mr Edina’.

His family released a statement on Wednesday through Police Scotland, saying: “Keith Smith – a much loved and missed father of two, step-dad, grandad, partner, uncle, brother, son and friend to many in the community.”

Officers are continuing to investigate the smash.

Sergeant Paul Ewing, of the force’s road policing unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Keith’s family and friends at this difficult time and we will continue to provide them with specialist support.

“We continue to appeal for any information surrounding the crash and would ask anyone who may be able to assist with our enquiries to come forward and speak to officers.”

Police can be contacted by calling 101 and quoting incident 1196 for Tuesday, December 28.

The female driver and male passenger of the Ford Kuga suffered serious injuries in the collision and remain in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Keith was a massive Hibs fan with a passion for grassroots football and helping local children.

Earlier, Edina Hibs paid tribute to him. The club said: “Keith never took a penny for coaching and all he talked about was providing this service to local kids.

“It’s this drive and heart that led him to be the brilliant person he was and a genuine community hero to many local kids.

“The phrase ‘Mr Edina’ has never been more accurate.

“We have lost a brilliant coach, but we have also lost a dear friend. The club is united with Keith’s family in mourning this devastating loss.”

A fundraiser has been set up to help Keith’s family pay for funeral expenses and has raised more than £1,000 after being launched hours ago.
