Family of man who died in Marbella balcony fall doubt police and fear foul play

The family of a Brit who fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Spain are desperate for answers – and fear foul play.

Tony Holmes plunged from the seventh floor of five-star Gran Melia Don Pepe in the Marbella horror on July 11 at 2am.

The dad of five, 49, landed on a man seated below, who also died.

Daughter Gabrielle and her four sisters don’t believe Spanish police claims that it was either an accident or suicide.

Gabrielle, 18, said: “Our questions have not been answered. The police in Spain seem to have no idea what happened.

“We don’t know how many people were on the balcony or who else was there. The people he was on holiday with say they were asleep when it happened.

“There is no way he would have fallen off a balcony. He was 17 stone and hasn’t drunk alcohol for seven years, he wasn’t the drunk Brit people have assumed he was in some comments we’ve read.

“My dad had everything to live for – five daughters and seven grandchildren with two more on the way, which he did everything for. We believe he never would have committed suicide, let alone go on holiday to kill himself.”

The mum of one, from South Shields, Tyne and Wear, exchanged texts with Tony, known as Bones, on the day he died. “He said he was having a good time and how hot it was,” she recalled.

“He had struggled with depression in the past and was never afraid to ask for help when he needed it and had been in a good place. He had got his medication to take the day before the holiday. Dad was always having a laugh.”

She says his death certificate has been left blank on the insistence of his family, despite Spanish police wanting to put “suicide or accident” as the cause.

His fall killed Spanish kickboxer Antonio Gonzalez, 43, a father of two.

Gabrielle said: “We contacted his friend on social media and said how sorry we are and asked him to pass a message to the family. We explained that we are sure there is more to this and that we are searching for answers.”

Gabrielle added: “We will never stop asking until we know what happened.”

“Someone knows something. Loads of British tourists would have been staying in that hotel. If anyone saw anything we urge them to speak out.”

The Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a man following his death in Marbella and are in contact with Spanish authorities.”
