Family of man paralysed in Benidorm water park accident 'demand answers'

The family of a man left paralysed after a Benidorm water park ride accident have said they 'want answers' over his horrific injuries.

David Briffaut, 23, broke two vertebrae while on the Splash ride at Aqualandia on July 8.

Footage shows the 23-year-old lying on the board, reportedly as directed - but Aqualandia claim he did not follow the rules of the ride.

Now, his mother Lorraine Briffaut has said: "We want to know how it happened".

Golf course green-keeper David, of South Benfleet, Essex, was celebrating the graduation of girlfriend Penny Bristow, 22, when he was hurt last week.

He is in intensive care in Spain, having had a tracheotomy, and he will need a plate in his neck.

His parents have now flown to Spain to be at his side.

Speaking to the BBC , mum Lorraine continued said she has been "overwhelmed" but he support received after the accident, but says she feels like her "life has stopped".

She added: "You feel that your life has stopped. You feel that your life has been completely turned upside down. It's horrible, it's horrendous."

The distraught mum described her son as "wonderful, funny and kind", adding: "My focus is on David, in getting him home and getting him the best care I can."

Lorraine praised hospital staff for their support as well as those who have donated £72,000 to help pay for David's care when he returns home.

A spokesman for the attraction said: "We have video footage which shows Mr Briffaut didn't follow the guidelines for Splash.

"Aqualandia has a long, 34-year history and safety is out top priority.

"Our rules and recommendations are clearly displayed at the park and must be adhered to by our visitors."
