Man knocked down and killed named as heartbroken family pay tribute

The family of a man killed in after being hit by a car on East Lancashire Road say his death has left them "numb".

Gareth Powell died after being hit by a car near Haydock Island at around 5.30pm on Monday, August 23.

He was taken to hospital but police confirmed he died.

His family have issued the following tribute: “Gaz was an amazing, caring, funny man who will be forever missed by everyone that knew and loved him.

“We are still numb by the tragic incident that had taken Gaz from our lives. He loved his guitar and playing cricket as well as his family, friends and animals.

“He will be deeply missed forever by his loving girlfriend Naomi, his mum Sandra, his dad Maurice and step-mum Jayne, his eldest sister and brother-in-law Emma and Phil, his step-sister Claire and her husband Baz, his two step-brothers Jon and Dan and their families and his two nieces Mel and Amelia will miss him so much.

“He will also be greatly missed by all his extended family, his friends and his work colleagues.”

Specialist family liaison officers are supporting his family and an investigation into the collision remains ongoing.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and has been assisting police with enquiries.

Roads Policing Inspector Carl McNulty, roads policing inspector, said: "An investigation is ongoing after a man sadly died following a collision in Haydock, and we are keen to speak to anyone with information.

"If you witnessed the collision, or have any dashcam footage from the Haydock Island area, please get in touch as it may assist our enquiries."
