Family of legendary comedian Brendan Grace thank public for support following cancer diagnosis

The family of legendary comedian Brendan Grace have thanked the public for their support following his cancer diagnosis.

It was revealed on Wednesday that the 68-year-old is suffering from lung cancer and has been undergoing treatment in Ireland.

His son-in-law, Frank Gillespie, spoke to Joe Duffy on RTE Radio One earlier today and sent a message from the comedian to his supporters.

He said: "The amount of cards, phone calls, people enquiring - we're just inundated. Brendan is battling away and he just wanted to let his fans know he loves them all out there, he knows everything that's going on and he's received all the wishes.

"Brendan loves getting mail in the post. He does his email and stuff like that. I said one time that if he wasn't a comedian, he would be a postman cause he's always mailing something out to people.

"From every part of the world, people are calling us and sending us wishes so we just wanted to get back and say a big thank you to everybody.

"We want to thank all the doctors and nurses that have been looking after him, he's been getting the best of care."

Brendan's Irish July/August tour was cancelled due to the illness, but Frank assured the public that the family are fighting to get the Combine Harvester hitmaker back on the road to entertain his fans.

Brendan has suffered a litany of setbacks in recent years, including a stroke that left him ‘looking under the influence’ as well as losing some of his toes as a result of gangrene caused by diabetes.

Frank continued: "We're fighting to get out there again, to do his gigs and to keep going. We're thinking, this is just a little set back and we'll keep everybody informed.

"He still has the humour, and he's making us laugh. He's making sure we're okay. We just wanted to get on today and say thank you, and we are going to get out there and get him well."
