Family of ISIS bride Lisa Smith claims she can't wait to get home to clear her name

ISIS bride Lisa Smith can’t wait to get home to clear her name, her family has claimed.

The mother of one travelled to Syria three years ago to join Islamic State.

Her family has said they believe she is innocent and are prepared to care for her two-year-old daughter if she is arrested upon arrival in Ireland.

Relatives told TD Peter Fitzpatrick that Smith, 38, remarried in Syria as a woman can’t live on her own “in that country”.

The Louth Independent Deputy told LMFM radio: “She has a baby daughter. In 2019, she was captured and detained by the US forces in northern Syria.

“She has denied being a member of ISIS, she says she’s not guilty [and] says she never owned a gun.

“She wants to come home to Dundalk and she’s willing to testify, to talk to anyone, to clear her name.”

But the family did not explain why Smith, who admitted being associated with ISIS, linked up with the terror group.

The former Air Corps member will be arrested when she arrives back from Turkey and faces an assessment to determine if she poses a security risk.

But gardai might find it difficult to bring charges against her.

It had been thought Smith’s two-year-old daughter would be taken into the care of the State at least while she is detained.

But with her family now volunteering to take the child this could change.
