Family of four in serious condition in hospital after Ayr house explosion as blast probe continues

A family of four are in a serious condition in hospital today after a blast ripped through an Ayr home.

A 43-year-old woman and 16-year-old boy are currently being treated at Glasgow's Royal Infirmary.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old male is at the city's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital while an 11-year-old boy is receiving care at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

Chief Inspector Derrick Johnson, area commander for South Ayrshire, confirmed that it was a mum, dad and their two children affected by the blast and that they were inside the worst-hit property at the time.

He added that this was a "complex incident" and that investigations were ongoing involving a number of different agencies.

The cause of the blast is still not known although Ch Insp Johnson acknowledged that a gas explosion was a line of enquiry they were looking at.

Ch Insp Johnson told Ayrshire Live: "At the outset of the incident it was chaotic and we worked hard to bring the situation under control, calling on resources from as far afield as [Glasgow] city centre.

"Circumstances like this brings out the best in the community and we have seen that here. Support from businesses and residents has been second to none. We have managed to speak to the four occupants affected and they are very much in our thoughts."

Dozens of emergency services raced to the scene just after 7pm last night.

The huge blast, which could be felt for miles around, destroyed a house while three other homes were left severely damaged.

Nearby residents were evacuated to the Queen Margaret Academy and Kincaidston Community Pavilion. It's not known when people will be able to return to their homes.

Horrific images taken from the skies this morning showed the extent of the explosion while the Kincaidston community has been praised for pulling together in the aftermath of what happened.
