Family of dog-walker fighting for life after hit-and-run will fly in from Romania to be at his bedside

The family of a man left fighting for his life in a hit-and-run collision are flying to Manchester from Romania to be at his hospital bedside.

Patrick Tartar was walking his dog, Buddy to a shop in Middleton at the time of the crash.

He remains in a critical condition in a coma in hospital.

A rallying cry has now been issued for the community to help out - as Buddy, too, was badly injured.

The impact broke both the dog's back legs and he may need to have part of his tail amputated.

Mr Tartar's devastated partner, Yvonne Locke, has spoken of her upset - as police confirmed a second arrest in connection with the incident has now been made.

Yvonne, 52, said her partner had only just left their home nearby to go to a Spar store to buy her a bottle of water after she had her flu jab when the collision happened.

Mr Tartar and Buddy were hit by a blue BMW 320 on Hollin Lane, Middleton, at about 9.15pm on Sunday.

Police said the driver failed to stop at the scene.

The BMW was later found in Heywood.

Buddy, a seven-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, remains under veterinary care.

A Go Fund Me appeal has been launched for Mr Tartar and the dog, as the vet's costs are likely to be expensive.

A 38-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, Greater Manchester Police said.

And the force has now revealed a second arrest has been made.

"Two arrests have been made and both have been released under investigation pending further enquiries," said a spokesman.

No further details have been revealed.

Mr Tartar, 35, a builder by trade, came to the country from Romania around seven years ago.

Ms Locke said he remained in a coma at Salford Royal Hospital. She is visiting him every day.

She said he suffered bleeding to the brain and a broken neck. His lungs were punctured and ribs cracked, with one of his legs broken in three places.

Ms Locke said Mr Tartar's mum and sister were due to fly into the UK on Wednesday.

She told the Manchester Evening News : "He is very poorly. He is not doing very well.

"He has got bleeding to the brain and a broken neck. His lungs are punctured and his ribs are cracked.

"His leg is broken on three places and he is in a coma. The doctors and surgeons said they can only do one thing at a time because they do not want to traumatise his body too much.

"His family are flying over from Romania.

"He had only been out with Buddy for five minutes and was walking to the shop to get me a bottle of water when it happened as I had just had my flu jab.

"His brain is swollen so they can't operate as yet.

"His mum and sister are flying over - they are both devastated."

Buddy's veterinary bills are currently said to stand at around £1,000.

The Go Fund Me appeal, authorised by the family, states: "Please, please if you can, help. Just 50p if you can.

"Let's raise funds for this family. Patrick's partner has enough to worry about without a huge vets bill too.

"Let's pray they both make it."

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses and dash-cam footage.
