Family of disabled girl blast selfish drivers for blocking wheelchair access

The family of a disabled girl have blasted selfish drivers for parking over their driveway and blocking her wheelchair in.

Kim Lightfoot’s daughter Harmony, who has cerebral palsy, uses a specialised chair.

But irresponsible parking outside her home has made it a nightmare for the three-year-old to get outside.

The final straw came for Kim when she left her home to take the three-year-old to nursery and was stopped from getting out of the driveway by a car parked on the pavement.

The 28-year-old mum, who lives in Huntersfield Road, Johnstone, had to lift her toddler’s chair over an unstable grass mound to get on to the street.

She was then forced onto an unsafe road - where she says cars often drive too fast - just to get past the vehicle.

Three is the magic number for Paisley parking campaigners

Kim said: “They parked right in front of our drive and we couldn’t get through.

“I was taking the kids to school and nursery and they wanted to ride their bikes because it was a nice day.

“We got them out of the shed and we walked down and I thought, ‘Are you for real?’ It’s hard enough for families with disabled children. We shouldn’t have to face this sort of thing.

“We had to go over a grass mound. The front wheels can get stuck on the grass and it’s easy for the chair to topple. It’s dangerous.”

Kim’s partner Kirsty Moore, 27, has been similarly scathing about the attitude of some people when they are parking their cars. She believes leaving vehicles on the pavement is putting children in danger and is worried the situation could cause an accident.

Kirsty said: “They can’t be bothered to find a space and walk. When we go out, sometimes there’s no option but to endanger all of us and go on to the road.

Family left with nothing after fire ravages home

“It’s the height of selfishness, especially when people park on a blind corner and there’s cars that come speeding down this road like no one’s business.

“Not even a pedestrian can get past those cars.”

Huntersfield Road has also been blighted by issues of double parking, as well as vans parking on the pavement at the end of the road.

The young couple are now considering contacting the relevant authorities to see if something can be done to deter the behaviour.

Neighbours have told the family to get in touch with Renfrewshire Council to see if prevention measures can be put in place on the pavement.

Kim added: “It’s difficult. I worry for all of the children in the street and their safety. It’s not just the wheelchair. Most of the people around here have prams and buggies. There’s a lot of children.”
