Family of British girl raped and murdered at Goa beach party finally get justice

The family of a young British girl raped and murdered in India finally got justice after an appeal court overturned the acquittal of one of two suspects.

The High Court in Goa convicted Samson D'Souza for the attack on 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling whose body was found on a beach in the resort city in 2008.

Prosecutors said the court upheld the acquittal of another suspect accused of leaving Scarlett to die on the beach after drugging and sexually abusing her.

Police originally said Scarlett had drowned after taking drugs but changed their story after her mother , Fiona MacKeown, complained.

Ms MacKoewn put pressure on the Indian authorities to carry out another post mortem, which revealed she was raped and murdered.

The case caused outrage among millions of Indian and foreign tourists who throng Goa's beaches.

A court acquitted both men in 2016, and the High Court took up the case in 2017.

The court will sentence D'Souza on Friday. He faces up to life in prison.

Under Indian laws, both the accused and prosecutors can appeal a trial court's verdict to the High Court and the Supreme Court.

After the verdict's Scarlett's mum Fiona, from Holsworthy, Devon, spoke of her relief.

The 55-year-old has been fighting for justice since her daughter's bruised and half-naked body was found on the shores of Anjuna beach in Goa in February 2008.

Two local men – Placido Carvalho and D'Souza – were charged with her rape and murder but acquitted in 2016.

Ms MacKeown said: "I'm actually still reeling. I can't quite believe that it's going to be over.

"It's happening. It's taking it's time to sink in that this is finally going to be over.

"Our lives have been on hold, well for me anyway. It's different for the children.

"They've been getting on with their lives by growing up. But it's been traumatic.

"Whenever I go to India they're always worried about what will happen to me.

"We are definitely going to be celebrating tonight with a bottle of bubbly."

The teenager travelled to India for a six-month family holiday with her mother and six of her eight brothers and sisters from their home in Bideford, Devon.

But after going to a Valentine's Day beach party while her family went travelling, she was raped and deliberately drowned after being plied with drugs including ecstasy, cocaine and LSD.
