Family of bicyclist asks hit-and-run driver of SUV to come forward

April 07--Police are searching for the driver of an SUV that struck and critically injured a bicyclist in a hit-and-run in the Logan Square neighborhood Friday.

An SUV struck Ricardo Capistran at 1 p.m. Friday as the SUV, which was traveling east, turned left from North Avenue onto Talman Avenue, police said. The SUV, described by police as dark colored, did not stop after the incident. Police issued an alert Saturday night describing the SUV as a four-door GMC or Chevrolet, with a shattered back passenger-side window and damage to the rear passenger door.

Capistran, 26, is at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a broken chest plate, fractured skull, broken pelvis, a collapsed lung, broken ribs and some brain swelling, according to family.

"He's pretty beat up," said Raul Capistran, Ricardo's older brother. He said Ricardo Capistran has a girlfriend and a young child. He also said his brother builds bikes as a hobby and relies on his bicycle.

"He's everywhere on that little bike," Raul Capistran said.

Capistran's brother is calling on the person who was driving the SUV to turn themselves in to authorities. Raul Capistran said he'd like to know why the person didn't stop and check on his brother.

"I don't see why there's any reason," he said.

Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is asked to call the Major Accident Investigation Unit at 312-745-4521.

Family is offering a reward of $1,000 for information.
