Family of 7-year-old boy who died in dad's arms determined to keep his memory alive

The family of a seven-year-old boy who died in his dad's arms just days after returning from a holiday are determined to keep his memory alive.

Joshua Old, who had severe disabilities, died in his sleep at home in Speke, Liverpool, after spending most of his life in and out of Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Since his death on July 19, 2015, his devastated family has been determined to keep his memory alive by holding an annual motorbike ride to raise money for organisations close to their heart.

This year they have chosen to support Alder Hey Children's Hospital, where Joshua spent a lot of his life receiving treatment and more than 30 operations.

Dad Michael Old told the Liverpool Echo : "This year is Alder Hey - a place that's close to our hearts.

"Joshua spent most of his life in and out of Alder Hey. It was unbelievable the amount of work Alder Hey did for him to try and give him quality of life.

"I don't know what was harder, the fact he passed away in my arms or the fact he passed away.

"It was kind of a relief for him because he didn't have to go through any more hospital appointments or have people sticking needles in him, but it was devastating for us."

The annual motorbike ride will be departing from the family's home in Speke at 10am on Sunday, August 22, and travelling to Joshua's favourite place in Anglesey, near South Stack Lighthouse.

All the money raised will be donated to Alder Hey Children's Charity, with over £1,300 made in donations so far.

Michael said: "I can't thank Alder Hey enough, every ward, the intensive care ward, the HCU staff, the surgical staff - they all played a big part in Joshua's life and that all helped, they were amazing. I can't stop saying thank you."

In previous years the family have raised money for Claire House Children’s Hospice, Zoë's Place Baby Hospice and Merseyside & Cheshire Blood Bikes.
