'Family model to deal with widespread disability in India'

SHILLONG: The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was celebrated at the Governor's House in Shillong on Friday, with a function jointly organized by the Meghalaya Parents Association for Disabled and Raj Bhavan, as governor Satya Pal Malik handed over certificates of appreciation to those who worked for the welfare of the differently abled in the state.

"The Covid situation has given us the opportunity to understand some of the very critical issues and sufferings of the disability sector in Indian context," the governor said.

"The disability management in India cannot follow the institutional model like many western countries. The Indian family model is more suited as family members are the main dependents of differently-abled individuals," he observed. "India being a vast country and the disability is perennially so widely spread and deeply embedded that only family model can serve the requirement," Malik added.

Later, the governor distributed gift hampers to differently-abled children at the lawns of the Raj Bhavan.
