Family members dead after learner driver crash in Tasmania's north, police say

Tasmania Police said they believe it was raining heavily at the time of the crash. (ABC News: Jessica Moran)

Two people are dead and two others seriously injured after a learner driver crossed over into oncoming traffic on a Tasmanian highway.

The crash happened on the West Tamar Highway near Exeter, about one kilometre north of Brady's Lookout, about 3:30pm on Friday.

Police said a 45-year-old man and 75-year-old woman who were passengers in the car driven by a learner driver died at the scene after their vehicle, which was travelling north, hit a van travelling south.

The ABC understands the deceased people were family members of the learner driver.

"It appears one car has crossed over to the incorrect side of the road and come into contact with the railing and has travelled down that railing for a certain period of time and the other [van] travelling south has come into contact with that car," Inspector Scott Flude said.

The driver of the van was seriously injured and was taken to the Launceston General Hospital.

The learner driver is in a serious condition.

"We are still investigating the circumstances of the crash, it would appear it was raining heavily at the time," Inspector Flude said.

The names of those involved have not been released.

It is the third double fatality in Tasmania's north since July 10.
