Family holidays set to become easier as PCR tests scrapped in time for October half term

The government announced an overhaul of its travel restrictions last week, which will make it easier for families to get abroad this October half-term.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed that fully vaccinated travellers will soon be able to use a cheaper lateral flow test instead of a PCR version for their day-two test.

Although he initially said that no date has been set yet for the removal of PCR testing, but was "aware" of calls for the move to be introduced before October half-term, UK Business minister Paul Scully confirmed it was part of the government's plan.

Speaking to Sky News about whether the change would come into effect by the holiday Mr Scully said: "That’s absolutely the aim.

“We’ve got to get the systems in place because we want to move to lateral flow tests to make it easier and cheaper for people to be able to enjoy those holidays at half-term. The aim is later on in October.

"We know that half-term is looming, we know people want to get away, but we also want to encourage business travel as well, because that is investment in the UK, it is investment in jobs and creates opportunities for people.”

The plans comes shortly after the government announced a U-Turn on its current international travel traffic system, which will come into place Monday 4 October.

The system change to just a single red list of countries which UK citizens are not able to travel to.

Mr Shapps said the new “simplified” system would still "manage the public health risk as No.1 priority”.

He said: “Today’s changes mean a simpler, more straightforward system. One with less testing and lower costs, allowing more people to travel, see loved ones or conduct business around the world while providing a boost for the travel industry.

“Public health has always been at the heart of our international travel policy and with more than eight in 10 adults fully vaccinated in the UK, we are now able to introduce a proportionate updated structure that reflects the new landscape.”
