Family has lucky escape after their car was submerged in Weardale ford

A family had a lucky escape after their car became trapped in a ford at St. John's Chapel in Weardale over the weekend.

Emergency services including police, fire and ambulance, attended the scene after a 4x4 vehicle chanced it and became submerged in deep water.

Luckily, all occupants of the vehicle managed to get out the submerged vehicle safely. One occupant of the car was treated by paramedics at the scene for cold water shock.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Reports of a vehicle trapped in the River Wear Ford at St John’s Chapel in Weardale came into CDDFRS control at 4pm on Saturday the 8th of January. One appliance and the Target response vehicle (TRV) from Stanhope attended the incident. Thankfully on arrival all occupants were safely out of the vehicle. Police and ambulance were also in attendance. One male occupant was treated by paramedics on scene for cold water shock. Fire crews left the scene at 5:30pm.”
