'MORTAL KOMBAT'
Rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, and some crude references.
What it’s about: A league of martial arts champions is assembled to fight in a tournament to protect the Earthrealm.
The kid attractor factor: The martial arts action will likely attract teens and older kids.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Dig deep within your soul to find your true power and what matters most.
Violence: Um, the title of the film is "Mortal Kombat." It's violent. This version adheres to the bloody sensibility of the arcade game, going for a hard R rating, with all the disembowelings and dismemberings that go along with it.
Language: Strong language and swearing throughout.
Sex: None, no nudity, some salty references and words from Kano.
Drugs: None.
Parents’ advisory: While the PG-13 original was fun for kids in the '90s, this R version is for the adults who used to be kids in '90s. A bit too hardcore for kids, but okay for teens.
'TOGETHER TOGETHER'
Rated R for some sexual references and language.
What it’s about: A single man in his 40s befriends the gestational surrogate he's hired to build a family on his own.
The kid attractor factor: This is more of an indie adult drama, some teens might be drawn to it for stars Ed Helms and Patti Harrison.
Good lessons/bad lessons: It's okay to be alone, but it's also nice to share connection wherever it can be found.
Violence: None.
Language: Some swearing and mature themes/language.
Sex: Discussion of sex and sex acts, no nudity.
Drugs: None
Parents’ advisory: While this indie comedy is rated R for some sex talk and swearing, it's a sweet story of friendship. Okay for teens and tweens if they're interested.
