Family guide to new movie releases

'THE LITTLE THINGS'

Rated R for violent/disturbing images, language and full nudity.

What it’s about: Denzel Washington stars as a troubled and obsessive cop hunting a serial killer in 1990 Los Angeles.

The kid attractor factor: Some teens might be drawn to the suspense thriller genre.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Any cop can turn bad if chasing bad guys becomes an obsession.

Violence: Some disturbing and bloody crime scene images and autopsies, discussion of death and murder, a chase sequence, and head injury delivered via shovel.

Language: Some swearing.

Sex: Nude female bodies, allusions to sex work.

Drugs: None.

Parents’ advisory: This is a very dark noir mystery about a serial murderer, not your average cop thriller. Proceed with caution with younger audiences. OK for older teens.

'SAINT MAUD'

Rated R for disturbing and violent content, sexual content and language.

What it’s about: A young English nurse develops a religious fervor, which leads to violent acts.

The kid attractor factor: Teen fans may be drawn to the genre

Good lessons/bad lessons: Loneliness and isolation can be a very dangerous thing.

Violence: Some incredibly disturbing and violent acts depicted graphically, if fantastically. The realm of reality and delusion is blurred, if bloody.

Language: Some swearing.

Sex: Nudity and frank images of sex, including nonconsensual sex.

Drugs: None.

Parents’ advisory: This film is too bloody and disturbing for younger audiences. Adults and older teens only.
