Family guide to new movie releases

'SPLIT'

Rated PG-13 for disturbing thematic content and behavior, violence and some language.

What it's about: A young man with multiple personality disorder kidnaps three teen girls who have to contend with each persona.

The kid attractor factor: Stars James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy, and the thriller/horror genre will attract teens.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Find power and strength in your pain and suffering. Be calm and think your way out of situations instead of acting impulsively.

Violence: In a story about kidnapping, there are assaults, deaths and gore, but much less than might be expected. Some bloody images, shootings, threats, etc.

Language: Brief language, not sustained throughout.

Sexuality: There's a suggestion and threat of sexual assault in the air, and a plot line about child sexual abuse that is intimated though not shown graphically.

Drugs: None

Parents advisory: Fine for teen audiences, but far too scary and thematically mature for kids.
