'JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH'
Rated R for violence and pervasive language.
What it’s about: The story of the life and death of Black Panther Deputy Chairman Fred Hampton in 1969 Chicago.
The kid attractor factor: This won't attract too many kids, but it could be a good history lesson for teens interested in racial justice and the history of revolutionary activism in America.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Incredibly illuminating as to how the FBI unjustly surveilled and undermined the Black Panther Party and other civil rights activists in the late '60s. The injustice and bloodshed perpetuated by this federal agency is staggering, and history that should be known.
Violence: Armed robbery, violent shootouts with police, beatings, explosions, police raids and gun murder.
Language: Swearing throughout.
Sex: Kissing and intimacy, but no sex scenes or nudity.
Drugs: None, other than references to drugging a drink.
Parents’ advisory: This film is violent and intense — not for small kids, but it could be interesting and educational for teens.
'LAND'
Rated PG-13 for thematic content, brief strong language, and partial nudity.
What it’s about: A woman seeks solace and healing in a remote mountain cabin.
The kid attractor factor: This is an adult drama; kids likely won't be interested.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Sometimes help comes when you least expect it. Open yourself up to the world and others around you and see what magic happens.
Violence: A couple of perilous scenes, including a rescue from almost freezing to death. References to violent deaths, self-harm and suicide.
Language: Some swearing.
Sex: None, but some partial nudity.
Drugs: None.
Parents’ advisory: While this is not aimed at younger audiences, it's a fine drama that would be appropriate for older kids or teens to watch.
