Family guide to new movie releases

'THE GRINCH'

Rated PG for brief rude humor.

What it's about: A faithful adaptation of Dr. Seuss' book, this animated feature follows the holiday grump as he attempts to steal Christmas and learns to open up.

The kid attractor factor: The beloved story, animation and humor.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Kindness and love are everything. Reach out to someone and share a connection rather than being upset. And Christmas isn't about gifts! It's about community.

Violence: Some harrowing sleigh and sled rides and bonks, but nothing intense.

Language: None.

Sexuality: The Grinch shakes his booty in exercise shorts?

Drugs: None.

Parents advisory: Holiday cheer for the whole family, with a classic story and great messaging. Not to mention the animation is wonderful.

'THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB: A DRAGON TATTOO STORY'

Rated R for violence, language and some sexual content/nudity.

What it's about: Swedish hacker vigilante Lisbeth Salander is back, and she's going after a crime syndicate trying to get their hands on a satellite weapon.

The kid attractor factor: Teens may be drawn to the action genre and edgy style.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Consider who and what you're fighting for and who you're trying to save.

Violence: Fighting, stabbing, shooting, torture, car crashes, suffocation, etc. This film is quite violent.

Language: Some swearing.

Sexuality: Some graphic nudity and references to sex and sexual abuse.

Drugs: None.

Parents advisory: Too violent and sexually mature for kids. OK for teens.
