Family guide to new movie releases

'SLENDER MAN'

Rated PG-13 for disturbing images, sequences of terror, thematic elements and language including some crude sexual references.

What it's about: Adapted from the internet horror story, the film follows a group of teens who summon Slender Man and systematically disappear.

The kid attractor factor: Teens will be attracted to the horror genre and young stars.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Don't summon any creepy figures on the internet _ especially strange men.

Violence: Some chases and choking. No real bloody violence, just disturbing fantasy imagery.

Language: A few instances of swearing.

Sexuality: Teens making out.

Drugs: Teens drinking.

Parents advisory: This horror movie isn't too horrific, so it's an ideal gateway for older kids interested in scary stuff. Too scary for little kids.

'THE MEG'

Rated PG-13 for action/peril, bloody images and some language.

What it's about: A great big prehistoric shark takes on Jason Statham.

The kid attractor factor: The action-adventure genre will draw older kids and teens.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Stay away from the very big shark, and just don't mess with his habitat.

Violence: Violent shark attacks and on screen deaths. Nothing too gory.

Language: Some swearing.

Sexuality: None, just flirtation.

Drugs: Drunkenness.

Parents advisory: A fun shark movie for older kids and teens _ too scary for little ones.
