'THE BIRTH OF A NATION'
Rated R for disturbing violent content, and some brief nudity.
What it's about: A biopic of Nat Turner, who led a bloody slave rebellion in 1831.
The kid attractor factor: The history lesson aspect, as well as the film's high profile may attract teen audiences.
Good lessons/bad lessons: God calls upon his servants to do what's right, even if it might be violent. Always protect and avenge you and yours.
Violence: There's quite a bit of violence which illustrates the horrors of slavery including whippings, shootings and gruesome torture. There's also quite a bit of implied sexual violence. That's all before the rebellion, which includes ax murders, beheadings, shootings, stabbings, cannon blasts, and eventually, graphic lynchings.
Language: None
Sexuality: The implied rapes and sexual exploitation, some nudity during a wedding night scene, some nudity during an African ritual Nat experienced as a child.
Drugs: None.
Parents advisory: The violence, especially the slave torture, and the culminating rebellion is tough to take for anyone, and may be too extreme for younger teens. The nudity and sexuality is fine for teens, but the rapes may require some conversation. Definitely not appropriate for children.
