Family guide to new movie releases

'SONIC THE HEDGEHOG'

Rated PG for action, some violence, rude humor and brief mild language.

What it's about: An adaptation of the speedy Sega video game character, who hits the road to escape an evil scientist, and makes some human friends along the way.

The kid attractor factor: The animated main character and broad humor.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Friendship and connecting with others who seem different than us can prevail over any evil.

Violence: Some perilous chase sequences and explosions, rockets, bullets, etc.

Language: Some body humor (farts, etc.).

Sex: None

Drugs: None

Parents' advisory: Fun for kids of all ages but likely too intense or scary for the youngest ones.

'DOWNHILL'

Rated R for language and some sexual material.

What it's about: A family experiences a traumatic event on a ski vacation.

The kid attractor factor: Not much _ this is a family dramedy only in that it's about a family. This tangles with adult ideas and complexities.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Show up for your family how they need you to show up when they ask you to.

Violence: A perilous avalanche scene.

Language: Some swearing throughout.

Sex: References to sex among adults.

Drugs: Drinking.

Parents' advisory: This is a dark-ish comedy for adults. It won't appeal to kids and is a bit too mature.
