'ONWARD'
Rated PG for action/peril and some mild thematic elements.
What it's about: A pair of teenage elves learn to harness their magic thanks to a spell from their deceased father and an epic coming-of-age quest.
The kid attractor factor: The animation and family-friendly tale from Disney/Pixar.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Instead of longing for something or someone you don't have, look around at the things and people you do have.
Violence: Some perilous chase sequences and a wild sword wielding, fire-breathing manticore.
Language: None.
Sex: None.
Drugs: None.
Parents' advisory: This is one of those Disney films that deals with the loss of a parent in a very tangible and rather morbid way: the brothers bring back only their deceased father's legs, which they take on their adventure with them. Be prepared to field some questions about death, loss and grief (per usual). Appropriate for all ages, but perhaps too scary for the littlest ones.
'THE WAY BACK'
Rated R for language throughout including some sexual references.
What it's about: An alcoholic former basketball star reckons with his demons while coaching his high school basketball team.
The kid attractor factor: This is more of an adult drama but some kids may be drawn to the high school sports aspect.
Good lessons/bad lessons: You cannot go it alone_ let you team lift you up.
Violence: Some brutal drunken driving and the accidents that come with it.
Language: Swearing_ a lot.
Sex: References to sex.
Drugs: A copious amount of alcohol consumption and references to drug use.
Parents' advisory: This film is so dark, dealing with addiction, grief and loss, it is not appropriate for younger audiences. Okay for teens.
