'SHAZAM!'
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action, language and suggestive material.
What it's about: A 14-year-old misfit turns into a superhero when he's imbued with magical powers from an ancient wizard.
The kid attractor factor: The superhero factor of course, as well as the fun, irreverent tone.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Family isn't who you're born with, it's what you make of it. Never doubt the power within you, and that you share with others.
Violence: Some wild fighting, scary monsters and other action violence.
Language: Some swearing.
Sexuality: None.
Drugs: Underage kids trying beer (and disliking it).
Parents advisory: This fun superhero flick is rather dark and violent at times. OK for kids but proceed with caution for younger ones.
'THE BEST OF ENEMIES'
Rated PG-13 for thematic material, racial epithets, some violence and a suggestive reference.
What it's about: The true story of a Klansman and a black activist who came together to desegregate Durham, N.C., schools in 1971 and forged a lifelong friendship.
The kid attractor factor: Not much _ this one will appeal to adults only.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Any divides can be bridged, if we talk to and learn from those we hate and fear.
Violence: Some threats, including shooting at houses, and a sexualized threat of violence against a woman.
Language: Frequent use of a racial slur.
Sexuality: Married affections.
Drugs: None.
Parents advisory: This serious story about America's racist history and the ways in which it has been fought is a good history lesson for kids. The film is accessible and appropriate for younger audiences who might be mature enough to handle the heavy issue.
