Family-friendly Hogmanay ideas to bring in the bells with the kids

For those avoiding the hustle and bustle of the bars, Hogmanay is the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with the family and ring in the new year with those we love the most.

And for those with young kids, New Year's Eve can be a magical experience and the chance to make some lifelong memories - especially since its an opportunity to skip bedtime and join in the midnight celebrations.

With Covid cases continuing to rise, many families are choosing to welcome 2022 from the comfort of their own home, either with a close-knit family party or cosy night in, according to Chronicle Live.

So if you are looking for creative ways to keep kids entertained this New Year's Eve, have a look below at our handy list of fun family-friendly ways to bring in the New Year.

1. Make a collection jar

These sweet little collection jars have been a popular tradition in families for years.

All you have to do is find a jar, or some sort of container, and give everyone several post stick notes or small pieces of paper.

Each person will write down two or three of their favourite family memories of the past year, stick them in the jar, give it a shake around and then pass it so that everyone has the chance to pull out a memory which they can read out-loud to the rest of the group.

It gives everyone a chance to feel nostalgic and reflect back on the happy times of the year drawing to a close, and it'll make a lovely keepsake for next year too.

2. Fireworks

You don't have to go along to the live shows to enjoy fireworks on New Year.

When the clock strikes 12, mark the occasion with a bang, and why not bring out the sparklers too.

Remember that strict safety measures should always be applied with home fireworks, especially when there are children around. To read more about how you can keep little ones safe around fireworks go here.

3. Make and share resolutions

If you have a whiteboard in your house, ask each member of the family to write their New Year's resolution on the board as a reminder and a visual goal for 2022.

For extra motivation, you could also decide not to rub the resolution off the whiteboard until it's been completed.

4. Have a mocktail at midnight

Set up a mini-bar in your home, filled with mocktails of all kinds and creations.

Use a online guide like this one from BBC Good Food, so that kids can take part in the fun and mix up their own drinks to toast in the New Year.

5. Confetti balloons

So long as you don't mind a spot of hoovering on New Year's Day, confetti balloons can be a really fun way to celebrate the event.

You could buy one gigantic one which the whole family can pop together at the stroke of the midnight, or you can each have a individual balloon to burst when the time comes.

Making confetti balloons at home couldn't be simpler, and it's a great way to keep kids entertained in the run up to the big moment.

All you'll need is a balloon and a selection of glitter or confetti to put inside the nozzle before blowing it up.

6. Board games

Family board game nights are always a great way to spend time together and make some new memories to finish off the year.

There's a whole host of fun board games you can break out - but if you still all want to be friends at the start of 2022 maybe give Monopoly a miss.

If board games aren't your thing, you can always fall back on trusty charades or forehead detective for hours of family fun.

7. Make glitter slime

Yes, it will be messy, but it will be a lot of fun.

Getting crafty by giving slime a glittery New Year makeover at home can be a great way of entertaining little one's throughout the evening.

You can follow glue company Elmer's guide of making glitter slime here.

8. Make DIY hats and crowns

For kids and adults, New Year's Eve is a great chance to get dressed up fancy in celebration.

Why not set up an arts and crafts table, and let the kids go wild creating funky hats or gold crowns covered in jewels to wear throughout the evening, so that they enter 2022 feeling like royalty.

9. Watch or create home videos

New Year's Eve is a time for reminiscing, and there is no better way to do that than to watch over the previous year in all its glory.

Why not create a home video showing memories of 2021 using iMovie or create a Instagram reel.

Connect your phone or laptop up to the TV, and then you can gather around together to look back at all your special moments.

10. Bake a cake

Can you fit 22 candles on a cake? Why not give it a go. If not you can always add one of these adorable 2022 cake toppers from Etsy to give it some extra flair.

11. Slumber party

Grab yourself some sweet treats, popcorn and sit up a pillow fort under the covers for a movie marathon night.

Something like the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings films are bound to enchant you all the way through the evening until midnight.

12. Disco

Put on your party dress, create a dedicated dance floor in the living room and crank up the stereo.

Create a family playlist full of your favourite tracks and dance the night away.

You could hold your own dance competition or take part in some TikTok dance trends.

Why not add DIY glowing balloons around the dance floor for that real disco vibe, by sticking some glow sticks inside balloons to make them glow in the dark.

13. Make some noise

For kids, New Year's Eve is a chance to let loose. Let them get loud by stocking up on party poppers, noise makers, cow bells and horns.

14. Create your own photo booth

Hang up a plain sheet or create your own colorful background with some wrapping paper or wallpaper to make the perfect photo backdrop.

You could also decorate it with your new year's resolutions or funny messages.

Get dressed up and make sure to include plenty of props from your kids fancy dress box (we're talking pirate patches, clown wigs, big glasses) or get crafty and create your own from scratch.

You could also get them printed out as a cute reminder of the night.
