'Family-friendly' Black Lives Matter solidarity gathering to be held at Bristol park

People in a suburb of Bristol are gathering in their local park for the city’s latest event to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter campaign.

The event is being held on Saturday morning (June 20) in Page Park in Staple Hill, with people being asked to join together for a socially-distant gathering in the park.

Organisers said they will be gathering people on the cricket pitch in front of the Bean Tree cafe at 10.30am on Saturday, and asking people to ‘take the knee’ for a total of eight minutes and 46 seconds - the length of time a police officer knelt on the neck of George Floyd.

Mr Floyd's death in Minneapolis last month triggered the latest wave of Black Lives Matter protests around the world.

Organisers said the action in Staple Hill is supported by local business owner Melody Beard and by the local councillors Michael Bell, Ian Boulton and Kate Cooper.

There will be a placard-making session from 9.45am on Saturday morning too.

“We will be gathering on the cricket pitch in front of the Bean Tree cafe at 10:30am to 'take the knee' for 8 minutes and 46 seconds,” said Melody and co-organiser Susan Newman.

“Speakers will then share their experience of working in local anti-racism initiatives and projects,” they added.

"This is a peaceful and family friendly event.”

Among the speakers will be Desmon Brown, the chair of the Lammy Review Group in Bristol, and former chair of the city’s Commission for Racial Equality.
