Family forced to flee home after tumble dryer goes up in flames

A family was forced to flee their home after their faulty tumble dryer burst into flames.

A picture shows the burnt-out wreck of the device, which sparked the blaze in Birmingham.

The fire erupted at around 7pm last night and caused serious damage to the property, although the family escaped unscathed, BirminghamLive reports.

Fire crews have now urged homeowners to make sure it doesn't happen to them by regularly servicing and cleaning their appliances.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We were called at 7.07pm to reports of a fire in a tumble dryer.

"The fire was contained to the room of origin but caused smoke damage and all the occupants in the house had managed to get out.

"Before crews left they carried out a 'safe and well' check, giving the occupants advice about fire safety and smoke alarms."

Crews from Sheldon Fire Station tweeted about the incident.

They said: "Last night, red watch attended a house fire caused by a faulty tumble dryer.

"No-one was harmed, but heavy smoke damage to the house.

"Just be careful when using appliances, and make sure they’re serviced/cleaned regularly. And always make sure you have smoke alarms!"

It comes after a mum scrambled to rescue her four-year-old boy from their smoke-filled home following another tumble dryer fire in December last year.

Chloe Haworth, 24, said she was woken up by her smoke alarm and when she went downstairs found a haze of white smoke.

She crawled upstairs to  rescue  her son and took him to the house next door.

The mum claims the tumble dryer was completely destroyed and that she's also been left with a painful throat after inhaling smoke during the incident at her home in Burnley, Lancs.
