Family fined for 200 mile fishing trip as second home owners find lockdown loophole

A family was fined for attempting a 200 mile fishing trip during lockdown this weekend while others have tried to find a loophole to the second home rule.

A family from London was caught by Devon and Cornwall police at around 5am this morning after travelling a huge distance just to go fishing, reports the BBC.

Flouting the lockdown rules which state you must stay at home unless you have to make an essential trip out, the family were stopped near Torquay in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said had they had left their home in the capital  with the bright idea of heading all the way to the south coast despite repeated warnings to only travel if absolutely necessary.

Control room supervisor Mike Newton wrote on Twitter : “Officers locate a family from London who have driven overnight for a spot of fishing.

“Escorted out of Devon, and adults issued with fines. I shall refrain from further comment.”

This family were stopped and told to drive back home just as another tried to find a loophole in the government rules.

According to lockdown, no-one should be travelling to second homes.

Yet North Wales Police has been looking into claims families have been sending suitcases by courier to their second homes so they could drive to them without suspicious suitcases in the backs of their cars.

The Rural Crime Team for the force took to social media and said: “Unbelievably we are investigating reports that people are sending their suitcases via courier with their clothes to holiday homes in Wales.

“So if they get stopped enroute they are not found with them.

“Surely people aren't that selfish and cunning...are they? #StayHomeSaveLives.”
