Family fined after 'travelling to stay' in Northumberland town

Police have taken action against a family group for visiting the Northumberland town of Rothbury during lockdown.

According to police, a complaint was made about a family who had travelled to stay in the picturesque Coquetdale town, which is popular with tourists and holidaymakers in ordinary times.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm we received a report of a possible breach of Coronavirus legislation regarding a family who had travelled to stay at an address in Rothbury.

"We can confirm we have taken enforcement action and those involved have been reported for breaches of the legislation.

"We would urge everyone to follow the legislation and guidance which is in place to help protect us all from Covid-19.”

Under coronavirus legislation, people over 18 can be fined £200 for the first offence of breaking lockdown rules.

Northumbria Police have pledged to "engage" with people and explain rules, encouraging them to abide by them, before "where necessary taking enforcement action".

Under new lockdown rules, people are not allowed to make trips away from their main residents without reasonable excuse.

Government rules state: "This means that holidays in the UK and abroad are not allowed.

"This includes staying in a second home or caravan, if that is not your primary residence. This also includes staying with anyone who you don’t live with unless they’re in your support bubble."

Those who were already away from home when the rules were introduced were told: "If you are already on holiday, you should return to your home as soon as practical."
