Family find message in bottle with man's ashes 2 years after widow threw it into sea

A family enjoying a day out at the beach found a man's ashes along with a message in a bottle floating in the sea.

The Alvarez family from Carballo, Spain, were shocked to discover a note from a woman revealing the mystery contents of the bottle were her late husband's ashes.

Mary Whitt, 64,000 kms away in Kentucky, US, had been shaken by the death of her husband of 30 years, Jerry, two years ago.

On his bucket list was the desire to travel but he never got to do so because of work commitments.

So two months after he passed away, Mary started to tick off Jerry's bucket list on his behalf.

She told Yahoo News : "I decided to put Jerry’s ashes in a bottle, and his picture and a note, I thought that this would be a good way that he could travel."

Mary threw the bottle into the ocean and two years later, last month, the Alvarez family found it on Razo beach, northwest Spain.

The bottle included a photograph of Jerry.

The Alvarez's made contact with Mary who asked them to scatter his ashes into the sea.

They filmed the poignant moment so that Mary could feel like she was present - and the two families still keep in touch.
