A family farm has transformed a sheep shed into a wedding venue, following a two year build and £1.9m investment.
The Hamilton family, who own Cairns Farm Estate on the Harperrig reservoir within the Pentland Hill Regional Park, turned the large shed into an event venue with overnight accommodation.
The 1,200-acre country estate and hill farm is located near Kirknewton and around eight miles from Edinburgh. It has been in the Hamilton family since 1869.
Caroline and Graham Hamilton led the project, with their children taking on individual roles to match their own skills - Joanna as an interior designer, Bobby assisting with finance and funding, while Alistair was the project manager and joiner.
The family worked with Chris Duncan from Mill Architects to develop a modern multi-use venue.
The main shed was converted into a space which can hold up to 180 guests and includes a ceremony room, function room, bar, breakout areas and kitchens.
It was built around buildings which were once home to cattle over the winter and sheep during lambing season.
It also features on-site accommodation which can sleep up to 24 guests, in a 19th century 10-bedroom country house, six brand new en-suite cabins that can sleep up to 12, and a honeymoon hideaway.
Cairns Farm Estate is set to host its first wedding on 22 May and is booked into 2022.
Caroline Hamilton said: “It’s been a real labour of love, with each member of the family adding their unique skill and personality throughout the planning and the build.
“The idea was driven by the modernisation of our agricultural industry and the need for diversification to create a secure future for the family and the estate.
"It was crucial that the venue would reflect its roots as a sheep shed and sit naturally in the environment and so it maintains the beauty and integrity of the land and landscape.”
