Family distraught after second theft of defibrillator installed in memory of Glasgow landlord killed in own pub

The family of a dad who died of a heart attack after an attack in his Glasgow pub have been left distraught as callous thieves targeted life-saving defibrillators for a second time.

Peter Derrick, 58, from Netherlee, suffered a heart attack after he was assaulted in his own pub, Viceroy Bar, on Glasgow's Paisley Road West in July, 2019.

He was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University hospital and placed in an induced coma, but died 12 days later.

, 59, was behind bars on Friday after pleading guilty to killing him at the High Court in Glasgow.

That night thugs vandalised a defibrillator box outside of his wife's salon causing £700 worth of damage.

Peter's family had raised more than £13,000 to install defibrillators from Peter's pub to Ibrox Stadium in his memory.

Last night callous thieves swiped a £1000 defibrillator installed outside of Peter's own pub Viceroy Bar, which was mounted next to a memorial plaque for the popular landlord.

His daughter Robyn told the Record: "This is the second attack on life-saving equipment installed in my dad's memory.

"We fundraised for these defibrillators so that lives could be saved and other families wouldn't have to go through the heartbreak we did.

"As a family we are distraught. This was the first defibrillator we had installed and it's outside his pub.

"Why would anyone do this?"

Police Scotland are investigating the theft.

Peter ran the Viceroy Bar, which had originally been bought by his parents in 1975.

Conaghan -  who already had a history of violence - admitted culpable homicide after Peter struggled to eject him from the pub for branding others drinkers “p***s” and “homosexuals”.

Peter tragically collapsed after he “struggled violently” with Conaghan during the altercation.

CCTV played in court then showed Peter walking into his pub and then suddenly slumping to the ground.

A post mortem revealed the dad had also had a heart disease, which meant he was “susceptible” to a potentially fatal attack.

Pathologists concluded there was a "clear link between the incident and the cardiac arrest”.

Conaghan will face sentence next month.

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
