Family 'devastated' after puppy left paralysed

A family are raising £7,000 for their dog to have spinal surgery after her back legs became paralysed.

Gemma Jakeman, and her family, from Tameside, have had their three-year-old French bulldog Ada since she was a puppy.

The family got her when she was eight-weeks-old.

Ada woke up at their Hyde home on Wednesday (August 4) and was slightly unstable on her legs, her family said.

Her owners weren't concerned at first as sometimes this happened when she was playing and jumping around.

But when Gemma got in from work on Thursday morning (August 5) after a night shift, she found Ada dragging herself across the floor with her front legs.

She booked an emergency appointment for her at the vets.

They said Ada was paralysed in both back legs.

The vets gave Ada an injection for pain relief and then Gemma and her family took her home.

Ada needs spine surgery and an MRI as well as a CT scan as soon as possible which will cost around £7,000.

Gemma told Manchester Evening News : "We are devastated at this news as it has come completely out of the blue.

"Ada is only three years old and normally a fit and active dog who loves walkies and playing ball.

"She is best friends with Phoebe, my eight-year-old daughter who adores Ada too.

"I could not believe it when I came in and Ada was dragging herself across the floor with her front legs.

"Ada is comfy at the moment as she has had another injection today (August 7) for pain relief and is on strict crate rest.

"She is only coming out to try and go to the toilet. We are back at the vets on Monday.

"First things first we need to get the funds together for the MRI so we know exactly what surgery is needed and the extent of her spinal injury."

When the family have raised enough money they are planning on taking her to Northwest Referrals to get her MRI and CT scan.
