Family describe heartache as dad hit by car outside Rhondda nightclub remains critical on son's birthday

A mum has described her family's pain and anguish after her fiancé was left in a critical condition after being hit by a car outside a nightclub in Pentre.

Carrieann Jones, 24, from Treherbert , said her fiancé Ben Nicholas should be with their son on his birthday instead of being at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff .

The little boy turned three on Monday - the day after Father's Day.

Ben was hit by a car outside The Banc night club on Llewellyn Street, Pentre, at about 1.30am on Sunday, June 9.

Since being taken to hospital, he has remained in a critical condition.

"He has missed Father's Day and our child's third birthday," Carrieann said.

"My son doesn't understand what's happened to his father. Today [his birthday] he expects his father there and he isn't.

"It's difficult for all the family, because Ben is a lovely boy. He wouldn't hurt a fly.

"It's just horrible."

Now Carrieann has set up an online petition to put up safety railings outside the nightclub.

"I wanted to do the petition to stop it happening to anyone else," she said.

"I do think that railings will be beneficial. People get taxis and lifts on the other side of the road.

"I want to get as many signatures as possible to put forward to the council for them to either give permission or fit safety railings outside of the nightclub.

"I don't want anyone to go through what we have."

South Wales Police said a 30-year-old man has been arrested and has been charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Adam Taylor, who is from Williamstown, appeared before Merthyr Magistrates Court on Monday, June 10, where he was remanded in custody.

He will now appear at Merthyr Crown Court on July 8.
