Family demand answers over nan killed after explosion tore through home

The distraught family of a woman who died after a suspected gas explosion have demanded answers over her death.

Maria Lynch, 62, died after sustaining severe injuries in the explosion at her home in Thomaston Street, Everton, last week.

The grandmother-of-six died was rushed to hospital on Thursday, November 21 with severe burns after the explosion tore through her home.

Both the gas distribution company responsible for maintaining the network and the housing association which owned Mrs Lynch's house said they will assist Police and the Health and Safety Executive in their investigations.

Maria's daughter Samantha Kearns, 43, spoke of her anger over her mother's death and vowed that "action will be taken".

She also claimed the house her mother lived in "had no gas appliances."

Speaking to the ECHO, Samantha said: "We are very angry. Of course we are angry at what has happened."

She added: "She had no gas appliances. She didn't have a gas fire or a gas cooker. For this to happen through no fault of your own is unbelievable.

"I'm not going to let my mum pass in vain. It goes without saying that we will try and find out what has caused my mum's death and whether anyone was responsible for it."

Samantha said she is in "constant communication" with the relevant authorities and being kept informed by police.

Speaking about the impact of her mum's sudden death, Samantha said her whole family are devastated and in a state of disbelief.

She said: "This has devastated our whole family because it is not a normal death. She's been taken away from us for no apparent reason.

"I can't believe she's passed. It's disbelief. We are in a state of utter disbelief which everyone in the family is feeling."

Maria's sister Theresa Walker, 60, said that the family deserves "to know how this happened".

She told the ECHO: "Nothing is going to help us process this but it will help us understand and find out who is to blame for this.

"Nothing is going to help us come to terms with it. We'd just like to know how this happened."

She added: "We hope that police and investigators will be able to find out what happened to my sister.

"I don't think anyone could ever believe that something so tragic could happen in their own home.

"She has died through no fault of her own.

"You just think, why has this happened? It's a horrific way to die."

The house where the gas explosion took place was owned by housing provider Your Housing Group.

In a statement, Michael Redford, Director of Customer Service Delivery for Your Housing Group, said: "We extend our thoughts and deepest sympathies to Mrs Lynch's family for their loss.

"Our team will provide the HSE with any assistance they require during their investigation."

Cadent Gas, the company which operates the gas network running below the street, has said that it is working to "establish the facts of what happened".

Jenny Moten, Director of Cadent's North West Network said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the resident, who we now know has sadly died. I have sent my sympathies and offered support to her family.

"We are assisting the Health and Safety Executive and emergency services as they investigate the circumstances and establish the facts of what happened. It is too early to say what caused this incident."
