Family demand answers after dad dies in prison cell weeks before release

A prisoner was found dead in his cell, weeks before he was due to be released.

Stewart Glancy's family say they they still don't know what happened before his body was discovered.

And they've demanded to know why his body was released for cremation before the cause of his death is known.

The Hamilton dad's grieving family have criticised HMP Addiewell for a lack of information, the Daily Record reports.

Steward, 38, was in the final phase of his 14-month sentence for housebreaking when he died on June 20.

His death certificate states the cause is "unascertained pending laboratory studies".

The family say they have learned very little about the circumstances surrounding his death but were assured it was not related to Covid-19.

A relative said: "We've been told he was suffering stomach pains and staff were checking on him every 30 minutes.

"Knowing Stewart, if he had been in any sort of pain he would have been pressing the cell buzzer and shouting for help.

"We were told that his trainers were binned because they were contaminated with blood, and there was blood in his cell.

"We believe he must have been bringing up blood - so why wasn't he taken to hospital?

"After he died, Stewart was put in a body bag and the family weren't allowed to see him. We were told it was due to 'contamination' but were assured it was nothing to do with Covid-19.

"What was it and why was his body released for cremation when they don't know what killed him?

"Nothing adds up here and we need answers."

A Crown Office spokesman said: "The procurator fiscal received a report following the death of a 38-year-old man at HMP Addiewell on June 20.

"The investigation, under the direction of the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit, is ongoing and the family will be updated with any significant developments."

The Scottish Prison Service declined to comment.
