Family anger over death of ‘angel’ carer, 26, who wasn't given protective equipment

The distraught mum of a carer who died of Covid-19 believes her daughter was let down by the Government and exposed to risk.

Ayse Kaygan said 26-year-old Sonya, who left behind a three-year-old daughter, should have been given PPE as soon as the virus was discovered.

Now looking after Sonya’s daughter, who is also called Ayse, the heartbroken gran said: “The baby keeps asking, ‘Where is Mum?’ What can I tell her?”

Ayse, of Enfield, North London, was a nurse in her native Cyprus and has been a carer in the UK for 10 years.

She said Sonya, who died at a local residential home, was studying to become a qualified nurse. But now Ayse, 54, has been forced to quit her job to care for her granddaughter.

She said: “It’s all I can do for my daughter now, and I am happy to do it but we are all heartbroken. I cannot believe my daughter has gone.

“She was the kindest person imaginable. We have lost an angel.”

Sonya’s uncle Hasin added: “It is tragic and we are devastated, but we are also angry that Sonya and other carers were not protected.

“They should have been given protective clothing from the very start.

“They should have been tested. All staff in care homes should have been offered tests on day one.

“Instead, they were left completely exposed, and we have lost a young woman we loved very much.

“My sister has lost a daughter and little Ayse has lost her mother.”
