Families told of their terror after gunshots were fired in front of children playing out on the street.

Two bullet casings were found on Victoria Fields in Birkenhead just after 7pm.

Police described the shooting as an "incredibly reckless act."

A witness told our reporter at the scene: “Two motorbikes drove up with two people on each.

“One person got off one of the motorbikes, went along the side of the flats, and there were two gunshots.

“It was all over really quickly.

“There were kids out playing at the time and some of them saw what happened.

“It’s unbelievable that someone could do something like that when there were children present.”

Another witness wrote on Facebook: "Oh my god it's by mine, there's loads of kids about."

Officers were called to the scene at 7.25pm minutes after the shooting.

Merseyside Police said they could not find any evidence of damage or injuries at the scene.

The scene has been cordoned off by police while forensics and a house-to-house investigation is carried out.

Detective Inspector Nick Suffield said: “These are the very early stages of our investigation, so I would initially like to appeal to anyone who was in the area and saw or heard anything to let us know.

"This happened in the daylight with children in the area so was an incredibly reckless act. If you saw anyone acting suspiciously, the incident itself, or someone making off on foot or a vehicle, come forward. 

“Firearms incidents in Wirral are rare and we know that people will be concerned that this happened in their area. I want to reassure the community that we will act on all information to find the person responsible, however you choose to pass the information on, but stand with us and help us keep your area safe. 



“Call us directly, or via the charity Crimestoppers, which is completely independent of the police, and what you tell us will be handled with sensitivity.”
