Families struggling during lockdown are getting vital support over text

Families struggling during the coronavirus lockdown are getting vital help and support through a new initiative.

A number of organisations across Greater Manchester have come together to provide support and friendship for families through an army of volunteers.

Homestart, commissioned in Trafford by the council with funding from the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and Trafford Housing Trust and also working in Salford and Wigan, is all about parents supporting parents.

The initiative’s volunteers and staff are busier than ever during lockdown.

So far, the programme has made 582 phone calls to support and stay connected to families, delivered essential food parcels to 63 people provided by the Brian Kennedy Trust and held 876 text and email conversations to share information and to help lift families’ spirits.

Those involved are supporting children too, with story-time now taking place over Facetime.

Kathryn Eckersley, managing director of Home-Start Trafford, Salford and Wigan, said: “Like so many others, we are working in unprecedented times at the moment. We are having to adapt how we help families, from volunteer-led support inside the home to largely telephone support.

“Regardless of the current crisis, we have to make sure we are there for our families who are often the most vulnerable in society – coping with poor mental health, financial issues and lack of family support networks. In these changing times we are having to move fast, providing vital items for our families. Be that nappies, activity packs, food parcels.

“A huge thanks to Trafford Council, CCG and Trafford Housing Trust who fund us, invest in us, and understand the difference we make to families in our local communities.”

Coun Catherine Hynes, Trafford Council’s executive member for children’s social care, said: “We know some families are struggling during lockdown and it’s fantastic to see the support Homestart Trafford is providing during these challenging times.

“Homestart volunteers are reaching out, in innovative ways, to offer friendship or practical support, such as food and essentials. At a time when is so important for people to feel connected, Homestart initiatives are helping to bring a sense of community to families, in their own homes”.
