Families stranded 120ft in the air after high speed rollercoaster breaks down

A high speed roller coaster stalled around 120ft in the air forcing riders to be evacuated today.

The ride, named Shockwave, suffered a malfunction at Drayton Manor, in the Midlands, at around 10.35am.

Shockwave, which reaches speeds of 53mph, is one of the only roller coasters in Europe where riders stand up in the carriages.

Drayton Manor confirmed the ride was closed and a 'standard evacuation' had taken place, reports Birmingham Live.

Visitor Greg Taylor tweeted video footage of the ride being evacuated.

William Bryan, Managing Director of Drayton Manor Park, said: "At 10:35 today, Shockwave experienced a temporary stoppage on the lift and guests were evacuated.

"At no point was guest safety compromised. A number of other rides were also temporarily closed.

"The Bounty is also out of operation today for planned, routine maintenance work.

"We sincerely apologise to our visitors for any inconvenience caused and stress that the safety of our guests is our priority."

One visitor claimed a number of rides haven't been working at the Staffordshire theme park today.

They wrote: "Shocking day  @Draytonmanor  Shockwave broke down with first load on, Maelstrom off, Pirate Ship off, Air Race off, not got on a ride yet  #awful  "

The Tamworth theme park was struck by tragedy in May 2017, when 11-year-old Evha Jannath died after falling from a raft on the Splash Canyon ride.

After the fall Evha, who was visiting as part of an organised trip with her school Jame’ah Girls Academy, was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, but died a short while after she arrived.
