Families shouldn't need to contact a national newspaper to get treatment - NHS needs fixed

Families worried sick about the health of a loved one should not have to contact a national newspaper to get life-saving treatment.

Catherine Rae has ovarian cancer and she needs to have surgery to prevent it spreading to her major organs. The aggressive form of the disease she has means cells grow quickly and her oncologist, clearly concerned about her welfare, told her family to seek private care if they could afford it because she could not guarantee when Catherine would get her operation.

But the operation costs around £26,000 - more than the yearly family income - which menat the increased worry and strain on the family was incredible. Fortunately health chiefs saw sense after the Daily Record got involved and Catherine will get her operation on the NHS next week.

But at a time when the family should have been focussing on taking care of their loved one ahead of an operation, they spent it trying to figure out how they would fund the surgery. This family’s dilemma was completely unacceptable.

No one should have to face the choices Catherine and her loved ones had to make before being told she would receive her operation The Daily Record is always happy to fight for our readers but it should never be necessary that we have to intervene.

Our NHS is bloodied and bruised through a lack of investment and the ever-increasing demands on the services it provides. It must be restored to rude health as a matter of urgency.

Stop pyros before there is a tragedy

The tribal drum beats and banners bring an element of excitement that has swept through Europe and beyond. But a line has to be drawn when their antics put themselves and other fans in danger

We are well into the world of lunacy when we see fans, stripped to the waist, launching rockets towards the pitch or opposing supporters. It’s plainly a matter of time before someone is serious injured.

That’s why the football authorities and Police Scotland have to get to grips with the hellraisers. It is welcome that talks are finally taking place to renew the battle against pyros.

We must get on top of this danger before an entirely foreseeable tragedy plays itself out.
