Families reunited at care home through special drive-in

Families are getting to see their loved ones after months apart at a special drive-in at a care home.

The drive-in experience has been set up in the car park of the home to allow families re-united meet up.

Stations have been created for drivers to park in and speak out of their windows to their elderly family member.

Manager Edgar Bautista said the reunions at Capel Grange care home in Pill, Newport, have cheered up the residents.

He said: “I could see that being isolated and kept in their bedroom was affecting the residents' general health conditions.

“So, I thought of exploring ways of how we can reconnect them with their families."

The move comes after the Welsh Government said those shielding could see members from one other household outdoors at the start of June.

Mr Bautista said: “They were able to have a conversation for thirty minutes, but weren’t allowed to get out of the car.

“We really made it an experience, by preparing a song for everyone at the end too.

“We have definitely seen an improvement in resident’s mental and general health.”
