Families panicking as supermarket shelves 'stripped bare'

Supermarket shelves in Formby and Southport have been stripped almost bare, with a number of products appearing to be in short supply.

Phil Jones told the ECHO he went to the Tesco Superstore on Altcar Road, Formby, on Friday.

He said some shelves were "stripped bare", and there were hardly any vegetables, with items such as fruit, meat and juices seeming in short supply.

Phil also said beer was stacked on some of the empty shelves and joked his daughter would have to "learn to like lager".

Another man said he had a similar experience at the Tesco Extra store in Southport, saying he finds the situation "extremely worrying".

The ECHO understands supermarkets are experiencing disruption from an industry-wide shortage of HGV drivers, and an increase in colleagues self-isolating on a precautionary basis.

This, on top of increased demand, is leading to reduced availability.

Tesco says its colleagues are working hard to get shelves back to fully stocked.

Richard Burnett, chief executive of the Road Haulage Association, spoke out on BBC Radio 4's Today.

He warned: "In the next two to three weeks we are facing a collapse of the supply chain meaning even bigger gaps on supermarket shelves.

"We already have hauliers unable to move goods on a daily basis and we’re now facing a perfect storm."

The government has admitted it is "concerned" by pictures of empty shelves, with Kwasi Kwarteng speaking out last week.

But ministers have also urged customers not to panic buy despite the limited amount of stock in some supermarket stores and branches in recent days.

Mr Burnett added: "This is a crisis on a scale we have never seen before in this industry and the Government is burying its head in the sand. It is not recognising the seriousness."
