Families of Scots soldiers killed in IRA 'honey trap' uncover fresh evidence

The families of three young Scots soldiers murdered in an IRA “honey trap” are demanding a fresh inquiry after finding new evidence.

Brothers John and Joseph McCaig, aged 17 and 18, from Ayr, and pal Dougald McCaughey, 23, from Glasgow, were executed on a remote Belfast road by an IRA hit squad in 1971.

They are thought to have been lured to their deaths by two women they met in a bar.

No one has ever been convicted over the deaths of the men, who were the first off-duty soldiers to be killed by the IRA.

Now, almost 50 years later, the families’ legal team has gained access to police files about the murders.

They include the name of a woman said to be involved in the “honey trap”, whose brother and dad were IRA members, and who could be living in England.

The soldiers’ relatives hope a new inquest will produce enough evidence to trigger a fresh police inquiry and a trial.

Dugald’s cousin David McCaughey, 52, said: “We must have an inquest so we can finally have the complete account of what happened and bring the killers who are still alive to the courts. It’s been nearly 50 years and it’s time we had justice.”
