Families left ‘broken’ by ‘pure evil’ funeral director Robert Bush

  • Robert Bush, a funeral director in Hull , admitted to 67 offences, including keeping 35 decomposing bodies at his Legacy Independent Funeral Directors premises and giving families the wrong ashes .
  • His crimes were discovered when colleagues , suspicious of his operations , found bodies "uncovered and in varying states of decomposition" and a human foetus at the site, leading them to alert the police.
  • Victims described Bush as "pure evil", with one family lighting candles around incorrect ashes on a loved one's birthday, and another feeling "broken" by his actions and the lack of dignity shown to their deceased relative.
  • Bush committed fraud concerning the ashes of 57 people between 2017 and 2024, totalling around £86,868, and also presented women with ashes falsely claiming they were the remains of their unborn children.
  • The court heard Bush breached the trust of grieving families "on an almost industrial scale" over 12 years, taking money for funeral plans without making arrangements and stealing charity donations collected at services.
