Families in Scotland will be able to meet up during lockdown from next week

Nicola Sturgeon has revealed that Scotland will move to the first phase of easing the lockdown restrictions from May 28.

From next Thursday, more outdoor activity will be allowed in Scotland, letting people sit in parks with people from one other household while observing social distancing.

The Welsh Government did say this week that they are considering relaxing lockdown so families from different households can meet outdoor s, but no date has been set.

In Northern Ireland groups of up to six people who do not share a household are being allowed to meet outdoors.

In England, people can already meet one other person from outside their household outdoors.

In Scotland, Ms Sturgeon said that golf, tennis, bowls, fishing and other non-contact outdoor activities will be able to resume, along with allowing people to travel a short distance to take part in recreation from May 28.

People will be able to sunbathe in parks and open spaces, travel for exercise and be encouraged back to work if they can't work from home.

Schools in Scotland have different terms to Wales, and Ms Sturgeon said schools there will only begin reopening from August 11, compared to the June 1 target date in England. No date has yet been given in Wales, but First Minister Mark Drakeford has said he would like to get Years 6, 10 and 12 back before the summer break for a time.

Waste and recycling services, along with some outdoor businesses, will also be allowed to re-open, Nicola Sturgeon told the Scottish Parliament.

The construction industry will be allowed to resume and any workplaces permitted to return in phase two will be able to prepare for the return of staff during the first phase.

Scotlanmd's First Minister also said a "phased resumption" of aspects of the criminal justice system will take place, along with a gradual restart of NHS services, such as cancer screenings, which were paused as a result of the outbreak.

Addressing the Scottish Parliament, the First Minister said the current lockdown was "creating harms of its own".

These harms are "loneliness and social isolation, deepening inequalities and serious damage to the economy", Ms Sturgeon said.

She said the route map published on Thursday is "high level" and that further advice will be made available over the coming days.

She added: "Today we are setting out the phases in which we will aim to ease lockdown and reduce the impact on all of us - individuals, families, communities and businesses.

"The steps we will take are by necessity gradual and incremental - and they must also be matched with rigorous, ongoing monitoring of the virus.

"There is no completely risk-free way of lifting lockdown. But we must mitigate the risks as much as we can and we must not at any stage act rashly or recklessly."

A total of 2,221 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus.
