Families get aid to fly home

Renfrewshire folk are amongst the tens of thousands of people who are to be repatriated to the UK, thanks to an agreement between the UK Government and several airlines.

BA, Virgin and Easyjet are among those working with the government to fly Britons back to the UK.

The government has also pledged £75million to charter special flights to bring UK nationals home from countries where commercial flights are not available.

The announcement has been welcomed by the SNP’s Foreign Affairs spokesman MP Alyn Smith.

He said: “I have been pressing the Foreign Office to do all that it can to help our constituents who are stuck abroad in challenging circumstances and, while the announcement should have come much sooner, the £75m package is a positive step.

“The UK has, so far, only organised limited flights from limited routes – leaving many vulnerable people trapped.

“I will continue to work with the Foreign Office to ensure people receive the support and travel arrangements necessary so that they are able to return swiftly and safely to their families.
